Vidrone II is a music video from a work-in-progress media opera, composed and directed by Gene Coleman, with texts by Lance Olsen, cinematography by Ryutaro Hakamata and Makoto Oshiro, animated sequences created by Gene Coleman and Chris Landau, edited by Nick Lerman. The performers in the video are Sansuzu Tsuruzawa (voice and shamisen) and Toshimaru Nakamura (live electronics).
This is the first 3+ minutes of "Sendai Transmissions", a music video I composed and directed in 2013 based on the architecture of the Sendai Mediatheque, a building designed by Toyo Ito. Featuring 8 outstanding musicians from Ensemble N_JP conducted by Adam Vidiksis, the work was commissioned by Chamber Music America and The Graham Foundation. This work brings together music composition, architecture, text, computer animation, cinema and fractal geometry. The video features cinematography by myself and Ryutaro Hakamata, editing and graphics by Nick Lerman and video animation sequences by Chris Landau. "Sendai Transmissions" uses Ito's building as a "text" to create an experience that blurs the lines between architecture, music and cinema. In the first 3 minutes we see the facade of the building through the many large trees in front along with words in Japanese (part of a text composed by me appearing throughout the work). We hear the instruments in relation to particular images and movements, setting up the dialog between sound and vision that is at the core of this work.
